Why I am optimistic

Posted by on Monday, June 13, 2005 (PST)

There's been a long list of depressing developments, but the American people are fueling my optimism...

The important and urgent issues facing America include:

  • fixing and exiting Iraq
  • fixing the American federal budget disaster
  • fixing the enormous American international trade deficit
  • taming oil prices and fixing our energy crisis
  • (notice how all the above are closely related!)
  • ending genocide in Darfur
  • fixing medicare
  • taming healthcare costs and access to insurance
  • fixing social security
  • fixing "no child left behind"

Americans understand the current leadership is not getting traction on these important issues. Their efforts are misplaced.

  • Instead of leaping to help tsunami or genocide victims, they tried to prolong the suffering of a permanently vegetative invalid
  • Instead of fixing medicare or social security, they are trying to kill social security
  • Ethics violations and damning memos are demonstrating a long established pattern of incompentence.

The good news is a crack is opening up and the light is shining through. The majority of Americans share our frustrations with President Bush's handling of:

  • 62% disapprove of the handling of social security
  • 58% disapprove of the handling of Iraq
  • 58% disapprove of the handling of the economy
  • Only 33% approve of Bush's embryonic stem cell attack

Wherever there are problems, there are opportunities. People are ready to listen to new solutions. The current ones are not working and people are frustrated. And that is exactly why I have so much optimism.

Let's get to work.

It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible.
